Exploring Picturebook Illustration

January 20 @ 5:30 PM 8:30 PM

Join us for our first collaborative class with the Marion Arts Center! Children’s Librarian, Miss Macy, will be teaching a three-week course on picturebook illustration! Read on for the class description, then register over at the MAC website. The MAC suggests a $10 donation for the three-week course, but you can also attend for free.

Remember the great books from your childhood, or that you read with your kids? Have you ever wondered what makes great illustrations for children? Explore picturebook illustrations in a three-week course with Macy Davis, the children’s librarian at the Elizabeth Taber Library. We’ll use Molly Bang’s Picture This: How Picture’s Work as our foundational text and create our own simple picturebooks as we work to understand the form. We’ll read and explore past Caldecott Winners including The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton, Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey, Hello Lighthouse by Sophie Blackall, The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney, and more! In our last course session, we’ll take a look at picturebooks published in the last calendar year such as Cat Nap by Brian Lies, Fireworks by Matthew Burgess, and Lets be Bees by Shawn Harris, among others! We’ll use the Caldecott criteria to determine which book published in 2025 our class thinks is “the most distinguished American picture book for children”.
